Culburra Beach
Culburra is a genuine timewarp seaside holiday town south of Sydney. It is a wonderfully sleepy village where women mow their front lawns in bikinis, families walk to the protected beach at Tilbury Cove for a quick dip, most of the houses are made from fibro or timber, and food choices are limited to the Chinese at the Bowling Club, fish, chips, burgers, pizzas and bakery from the local takeaways, or a barbecue or picnic.
Culburra is about enjoying the scenery and having a lazy day beside the sea. The choices are truly delightful. Drive into town, pass the shopping centre, and turn left off Penguin Head Road into Ocean Street. This will take you to two parking areas above Culburra Beach near Tilbury Cove. This is a near-perfect family beach because it is protected from both the southerly swell and southerly breezes. Further around Tilbury Cove is Tilbury Reserve, an excellent small park with a modern childrens play area, barbecues and fine views north towards Mount Coolangatta.
Beyond Tilbury Reserve, at the end of Penguin Head Road, are a number of lookouts with excellent views up and down the coast. Return on Penguin Head Road and veer left into Eastbourne Avenue, which leads to Warrain Beach, an excellent surfing beach patrolled by the Nowra Culburra surf club.
The beach also has access to the rock platform around the base of Penguin Head. Beyond the beach, Eastbourne Avenue curves around to Lake Wollumboola where there is a quiet park. Access to the lake is easy and the lakes foreshores are particularly beautiful and unspoilt.
